Why have a Doula?

Doula is professional childbirth assistance. The doula’s job is to help prepare for childbirth and be with the woman throughout childbirth, to provide support whenever the woman needs it and in the way that this particular woman needs. Typically, the doula is proficient in natural pain relief techniques, techniques for ensuring the optimal position of the baby, stimulation during labor, is able to do relaxing massage, and knows how a normal labor proceeds. The doula’s role is to “hold space” and help the woman in labor when the need arises.

Recent studies have shown that childbirth occurs with fewer interventions and complications if the woman is assisted by a doula throughout the labor.

Women who had continuous support for such a doula during labor versus women who did not have continuous support during labor:

  • 39% decrease in the risk of Cesarean Sections
  • 15% increase in the likelihood of a spontaneous vaginal birth
  • 10% decrease in the use of any medications for pain relief
  • 38% decrease in the baby’s risk of a low five minute Apgar score
  • 31% decrease in the risk of being dissatisfied with the birth experience
  • 34% less likely to rate their childbirth experience as negative

Also, 4 factors were identified that significantly affect childbirth satisfaction:

  • woman’s personal expectations
  • amount of support from staff
  • the quality of the woman’s relationship with the staff
  • women’s involvement in making decisions

The most strikingly positive effects of continuous support for a woman during childbirth are manifested when a woman is supported by a person who is not at the same time an employee of the maternity hospital, nor is part of the woman’s social network, and who is present at childbirth solely to take care of the mother.

What does a Doula do?
In short, a doula helps a woman become a mother with tasks such as:

  • provides emotional support
  • knows how to apply natural methods of pain relief: breathing, relaxation, massage, movement
  • gives informational and educational support
  • continuously soothes and maintains the woman’s self-confidence (keyword: continuously – the doula is always on the mother’s side)
  • helps the mother get reliable information about her rights in childbirth
  • acts on the mother’s side and promotes cooperation between the mother and specialists
  • supports the woman’s partner during childbirth, but her priority is the mother

It is also important to understand that the Doula:

  • has no medical education and is not a medical professional
  • does not perform any medical manipulations (including checking the deployment and monitoring the baby’s heartbeat)
  • does not provide medical advice or diagnosis
  • takes any of your decisions regarding pregnancy, childbirth and the postpartum period (yes, even if you chose something “terrible” from the point of view of other people or in your opinion)
  • does not teach you to “properly” live, give birth and care for a baby
  •  is not a substitute for a partner and / or husband
